The new Intel Classmate tablet PC released in early 2009 is a great low powered Netbook designed for use in primary schools. The main feature of the tablet PC is its 180 degree swivel display that makes it even more useful in primary schools. The display also features full touch screen functionality. The netbook is powered by 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and 1GB. The 8.9″ touchscreen display will support up to 1024×600 screen resolution. With its low power consuming processor, the netbook is expected to have up to 30% longer battery life.
The netbook is shipped with a rugged case and an accelerometer. The orientation of the screen changes when you switch to the tablet mode. Interation with the touchscreen is generally done by fingers or stylus. Intel have added new Palm Recognition that lets you rest your palm on the screen to write or draw. The webcam available at the top of display is modified to be used with the swivel display. The hard plastic handle has been retained for extra support.
Windows XP Home edition comes preloaded with this netbook. There are some other student-friendly application bundled as Quick Launcher apps. In terms of connectivity, the netbook offers a couple of USB 2.0 ports, SD card slot as well as an SSD drive. These are not all the details. Intel is yet to announce detailed specification of this notebook.
The price of the Intel product will be around $400 and it will be available in the market by the end of this year.
